What is in your Indiana Water?

The Truth About the Water in Your Home

Did you know that your local water can be filled with a variety of dissolved minerals that can cause damage to things in your home and in some instances, even your physical health?  Protecting your family and home is one of our biggest responsibilities.  You may have seen an email a few weeks ago regarding water quality, but we wanted to give some more information in this newsletter as well to make sure you are as well-informed as possible.

Get to Know your Water

Indiana water contains more minerals than ordinary water, especially calcium and magnesium.  This means that your water is considered “very hard” on the hardness scale according to Citizen’s Energy.

Pipes, Appliances and Water Heaters Beware.

Not only do calcium and magnesium cause a hard consistency, they don’t react well with other positively charged ions like soap. As a result, soap doesn’t break down easily. It clogs pipes and wreaks havoc on appliances like your dishwasher, washing machine and water heater.

Effects on your Hair & Skin

Soap & hard water are not compatible on your appliances or your skin.  When these two combine on the skin they create a soap scum, which clogs your pores.

Salt and potassium break down minerals in hard water and soap.  Soft water also dissolves soap & allows you to wash your skin without leaving behind any scum.

Hair can benefit from soft water too!  Soft water helps by smoothing out your wild hair and prevents buildup of minerals that weigh your hair down.

The Facts

According to the Water Quality Research Foundation, when softened water was used, appliances maintained their original factory efficiency rating for as long as 15 years. In contrast, hard water cut efficiency by up to 48% and some water heaters failed after just 1.6 years. Similar findings were noted for shower heads and faucets.

The study also found that in dishwashers, softened water achieves the same cleaning results as unsoftened while using less than half as much detergent. The same lathering power works in cleaning your body and hair, equating to the use of less shampoos and soaps.  (All of these benefits add up to significant monetary savings!)

Citizen’s Energy reports the hardness of the water supply in Indianapolis is between 12-20 grains per gallon.  The Water Quality Association states that anything over 10.5 grains per gallon is considered “very hard.”  As you can see, we have a major problem here in

Indianapolis that is damaging our homes, costing us money, and presenting a potential health risk.
